Chon Buri, Administrative province in eastern Thailand
Chon Buri is an administrative province on the eastern coast of Thailand that runs along the Gulf of Thailand and connects coastal zones with rural inland areas. The landscape shifts between sandy beaches, fishing villages and plains where rice and sugarcane grow.
Archaeological finds show that people already settled along the Panthong River during the Neolithic period and lived off fishing. Over the centuries, port settlements developed that traded with China and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Many residents work at small fishing docks where boats return with catches each morning. Families in rural areas still use water buffalo in traditional farming, especially in rice paddies where the animals help prepare soil.
The motorway from Bangkok leads directly into the province and makes arriving by car or bus easy. Laem Chabang port sits in the northern part and serves mostly freight traffic, while passenger ferries dock at smaller coastal towns.
The annual buffalo races in October bring communities together as farmers race their animals over short distances. The races are part of a local thanksgiving festival after the rice harvest and draw spectators from across the region.
