Phetchabun, Province in northern Thailand

Phetchabun is an administrative division in northern Thailand covering roughly 12,340 square kilometers (4,764 square miles) between mountain ranges. The Pa Sak valley runs through the center, providing space for farming with cabbage fields and other crops.

Two kingdoms, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya, exerted influence in this area and shaped the early development of the region. Fertile valleys later encouraged the growth of farming centers.

The shape of Phetchabun Mountain explains why a diamond appears on the provincial seal, referring to its pointed peak. Tobacco plants still grow in some valleys, and tamarind remains part of local farming.

Four national parks offer hiking trails, campsites, and wildlife observation points along Route 21. Mountain roads require extra care during rain or after dark.

A rare freshwater creature, the jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbyi, lives in waters throughout this region and was named the official aquatic animal. This tiny species usually appears in summer and goes unnoticed by many visitors.
