Samut Prakan, Province in Central Thailand.
Samut Prakan is a province on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand south of Bangkok. The landscape consists of low-lying coastal zones cut by river channels and canals, while densely populated districts spread inland.
This province developed as a port during the Ayutthaya Kingdom and served to defend the capital from the sea. After several administrative changes in the 20th century, the center was permanently moved to its current location.
The Sanskrit-derived name combines samudra meaning ocean and prakara meaning fortress, reflecting the province's traditional role as a coastal defense point.
This province includes Suvarnabhumi International Airport and several bridges crossing the river. Roads and waterways connect coastal towns with the capital and make visits to neighboring areas easier.
Since the 1990s, the coastline has visibly retreated due to erosion. Where mangrove forests once stood, shrimp farms now occupy the space and the shoreline has changed.
