Udon Thani, Administrative province in northeast Thailand.
Udon Thani is a province in northeast Thailand that spreads across wide plains and gentle hills. The landscape alternates between rice paddies, small forests, and rural settlements, broken up by broad roads and a few larger towns.
The area gained importance during the 1960s and 1970s when it served as a base for military operations. After that period ended, the region developed into a commercial and transport hub in the northeast.
The province's name, often shortened to Udon, means 'northern city' in Thai and reflects its position in the northeast. Many locals speak Isan, a dialect related to Lao, which adds a distinct linguistic flavor to daily life.
Most visitors reach the province through the international airport or the railway connection, both located near the capital. Long-distance buses link smaller towns to the center, allowing access to more remote areas as well.
Beneath the plains lie large potash deposits that have barely been touched. Geologists expect these reserves may become some of the most important in the world once extraction begins.
