Birecik Bridge, Deck arch bridge in Birecik, Turkey.
Birecik Bridge spans the Euphrates River with five arches over the water and fourteen sections across the land, reaching a total length of around 700 meters. The structure carries the D.400 highway on a roadway 11 meters wide, with pedestrian paths running along both sides.
Construction began in August 1951 and finished in March 1956, representing a significant step forward in infrastructure development for Anatolia. This completion enabled the first permanent road connection across the Euphrates in this region.
The bridge links two regions with distinct traditions and has become a central meeting point for people from Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa since its completion. Locals regularly use it to travel between provinces and maintain connections between the communities.
The bridge sits directly on the D.400 highway and is easily reached by car. Pedestrians can use the wide paths on both sides, with the best views of the river and surrounding landscape from the middle section.
The structure is recognized by the Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers as one of the fifty most notable engineering achievements in the country. This distinction honors both its technical accomplishment and its importance for regional connectivity.
