Qilai Main Peak, Mountain peak in Taroko National Park, Taiwan.
Qilai Main Peak is a mountain summit in Taiwan's Central Mountain Range, situated within Taroko National Park and part of a multi-day hiking network. The peak connects to various campsites and mountain lodges along established trails that traverse the surrounding ridge system.
The mountain has long served as part of traditional travel routes used by indigenous communities, who established knowledge of the terrain over many generations. Later surveying and exploration by colonial and modern authorities led to the development of organized trails and the integration of the summit into a managed national park system.
Indigenous Atayal and Seedig peoples traditionally used the mountain trails around Qilai for hunting expeditions and territorial movements across the region.
The trail requires multi-day backpacking with overnight stays at mountain lodges or campsites, so good physical preparation is essential beforehand. Weather conditions change rapidly at higher elevations, so bring warm layers and rain protection regardless of the forecast.
The Tianchi Lodge near Qilai Main Peak operates on solar power and provides running water at an elevation of 2,860 meters.
