Hehuanshan is a summit in the Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area in central Taiwan , located in Taroko National Park at an elevation of eleven thousand two hundred feet ( three thousand four hundred sixteen meters ) between Nantou and Hualien counties . The peak forms part of a range with several neighboring summits .
Japanese surveyor Yasushi Noro led an expedition in nineteen thirteen during which eighty-nine Taiwanese team members died in a storm . He completed the ascent later that year .
The name means „peak of happiness
Access follows Highway fourteen to Wuling Pass at ten thousand seven hundred fifty feet ( three thousand two hundred seventy-five meters ) , the highest paved road in East Asia . Weather conditions change quickly and hikers should bring warm clothing .
