Hehuanshan Main Peak Trail, Mountain trailhead in Nantou County, Taiwan
The Hehuanshan Main Peak Trail starts at 3,416 meters elevation and leads hikers through alpine meadows with rocky patches toward the summit. The route passes through changing terrain and opens to views across surrounding peaks and valleys.
This area held Taiwan's first ski resort in the 1950s, which operated when temperatures were colder and winter snow fell regularly. Remnants of this early tourism infrastructure can still be spotted in the landscape today.
Local indigenous communities regard this mountain as a sacred place where ceremonies take place regularly. These practices shape how people connect with the land and remain central to their way of life.
The trailhead has information boards and emergency supplies on site, with no permits required to start. Visitors can explore the area during different seasons, though conditions change significantly depending on weather.
The route passes through Taiwan's certified Dark Sky Park, offering excellent stargazing conditions from one of East Asia's highest points. Clear nights at this elevation allow rare views of the Milky Way and other celestial sights.
