Ren-ai Township

Ren'ai Township is a mountainous administrative area in Nantou County covering a vast region of forests, peaks, and valleys. Several national forest recreation areas and protected zones provide access to hiking routes, natural scenery, and outdoor spaces that draw visitors year-round.

A major dam project beginning in the early 1900s reshaped the area's water systems and led to the development of a neighboring mountain lake. This infrastructure had lasting effects on settlement patterns and how communities adapted to the landscape.

Three indigenous groups—the Seediq, Atayal, and Bunun—have lived here for centuries and continue to shape the area's character through their languages, crafts, and customs visible throughout the township. Their presence is felt in local settlements, where traditional knowledge guides daily relationships with the surrounding mountains and forests.

Forest recreation areas open during daytime hours and provide access to hiking trails and outdoor exploration. Come prepared for mountainous terrain and changing weather, as conditions at higher elevations shift quickly throughout the day.

A prominent peak over 3,400 meters high in this area serves as a major landmark connecting multiple districts and offering expansive views across the central mountain region. It remains one of the most recognizable summits for trekkers navigating the highlands.
