Nanhua Mountain, Mountain summit in central Taiwan.
Nanhua Mountain is a summit in central Taiwan at 3,184 meters (10,446 ft), sitting along a trekking route that links several neighboring peaks. The trail crosses ridges and passes through a broad mountain range shared with other high points.
The paths through this area grew out of a network of police stations built in the early 1900s to link eastern and western Taiwan. That early infrastructure became the foundation for the hiking routes used today.
The summit is a sought-after goal for Taiwanese hikers who want to test themselves at high altitude. Many come from across the island, and reaching the top carries a real sense of personal achievement.
Hikers need an official permit before setting out, and the trek typically takes two days with an overnight stop along the way. Good physical condition and proper gear are necessary given the altitude and the length of the route.
From the Tianchi Lake area at around 3,100 meters (10,170 ft), both this peak and the nearby Qilai South Peak are within reach on the same day. This makes the area one of the few places where two high summits can be combined in a single outing.
