Zihjhong, Mountain settlement in Chiayi County, Taiwan
Zihjhong is a mountain settlement on the border between Chiayi County and Nantou County in central Taiwan, sitting at around 2,280 meters above sea level. A major highway passes through it, linking the area to hiking routes and natural features across the surrounding highlands.
The area was originally known as Jiucuanzitou before being renamed in 1941 in honor of General Zhang Zizhong, a Chinese military commander. Over the following decades, the settlement gradually grew into a stopping point for people moving through the central mountains.
Zihjhong sits along a mountain road that hikers and cyclists pass through when crossing the central highlands. Small rest stops and roadside stalls along the route reflect the daily rhythm of this remote community.
The high elevation means weather can shift quickly, with mist and cool temperatures common at any time of year, so layered clothing is a good idea. Sturdy footwear is useful for exploring the trails and terrain around the settlement.
The Zengwen River, one of southern Taiwan's main rivers, has its source just outside the settlement. Walking through the area, visitors are standing near the very point where this river begins its course down toward the coast.
