Massapequa, Residential neighborhood in Nassau County, United States
Massapequa is an unincorporated community on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York. It is made up mainly of residential streets lined with single-family homes, alongside local schools, parks, and small commercial areas.
European settlers began arriving in this area in the late 1600s, establishing farms and small communities on land that had long been home to the Lenape people. After World War II, the area grew quickly as many families moved out of New York City and into the suburbs of Long Island.
The name Massapequa comes from the Lenape language and is thought to mean something close to "great water" or "great cove". Today the area has a strong neighborhood feel, with local schools, parks, and shopping strips that residents use on a daily basis.
Massapequa is served by the Long Island Rail Road, making travel to and from New York City straightforward. Regional bus lines also connect the area to nearby towns and services across Nassau County.
In 1953, an archaeological dig in the area uncovered a Lenape fortification that was later named a National Historic Landmark. Massapequa is also known as the hometown of several well-known American actors and comedians, giving the community a quiet connection to the entertainment world.
