Thunderbolt, Wooden roller coaster in Kennywood, West Mifflin, United States
Thunderbolt stretches across 3,250 feet of track, reaching heights of 70 feet and speeds of 55 miles per hour through multiple spirals and drops.
Originally constructed as Pippin in 1924 by John A. Miller, the coaster underwent extensive track modifications in 1968 and received its current name.
The New York Times ranked this wooden roller coaster as the number one coaster in the United States during 1974.
Passengers must ride with a partner in Century Flyer trains, which were installed in 1958 and continue operating on the track today.
The track layout begins with an immediate descent before the lift hill, contrary to traditional roller coaster designs that start with an ascent.
