McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge, Truss road bridge in Allegheny County, United States
The McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge is a steel truss structure that crosses the Monongahela River and links Route 837 in Duquesne with Route 148 in McKeesport. The roadway is roughly 38 feet wide with two traffic lanes, and sidewalks run along both sides for pedestrians.
The structure was completed in 1928 and replaced the earlier Riverton Bridge, which had been dismantled in 1915 due to safety issues. The project was funded by contributions from major railroad companies that sought to improve regional transportation connections.
Multiple railroad companies, including Pennsylvania Railroad and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, contributed substantial funds to construct this vital transportation connection in the region.
The bridge is open to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, offering straightforward passage across the river. You can walk or drive across with clear access on both sides, and the wide sidewalks make foot traffic comfortable regardless of weather.
The bridge combines two different truss types in its structure, showcasing early 20th century engineering techniques. This technical feature makes it a notable example of steel construction from that era.
