Clairton-Glassport Bridge

The Clairton-Glassport Bridge is a steel girder structure spanning the Monongahela River in Pennsylvania, built with massive sections supported by concrete columns. The construction features multiple spans and an extended viaduct section on the Glassport side.

This bridge replaced an earlier arch structure from the 1920s when it opened in 1987, incorporating stone elements from the previous crossing into its new foundation. The replacement represented a major upgrade to this important river connection.

The bridge joins two former steel towns and is used daily by people crossing between Clairton and Glassport. It serves as an ordinary but essential connection for residents of these industrial communities.

The crossing spans roughly 3 kilometers and operates daily for traffic flowing between the two towns. Visitors can use the bridge to explore the area or view it from various riverside vantage points along the river.

The structure uses a combination of welded girders and bolted splice plates, a constructive approach that reflects practical solutions from its time. This hybrid technique shows how engineering balanced strength with the technology available when the bridge was built.
