Kennywood, Amusement park in West Mifflin, United States.
Kennywood is an amusement park in West Mifflin near Pittsburgh that covers 80 acres (32 hectares) and offers more than 40 rides, including eight roller coasters and two water attractions. The different themed sections cluster around a central plaza with green spaces and seating areas, surrounded by classic carousels and modern rides.
The Monongahela Street Railways Company opened the park in 1898 as a destination at the end of its trolley line to attract more riders on weekends. The operator changed several times over the years, but the basic layout and some original wooden structures remain today.
The name comes from Andrew Kenny, who owned a farm here in the 19th century, and old wooden structures still recall the early days of the amusement park. Several rides from its founding era are protected landmarks and attract visitors interested in classic American leisure architecture.
The park opens during the warm months and is best visited on weekdays when crowds are lighter. Several food stands and restaurants are spread across the grounds, and there are designated picnic areas for families with their own meals.
The grounds served as the site of the Battle of the Monongahela in the mid-18th century during the French and Indian War. Later, the clearing became a popular picnic spot for soldiers and families during the American Civil War.
