Braddock Locks & Dam, Navigation lock and gravity dam on Monongahela River, Allegheny County, United States
Braddock Locks and Dam is a lock and dam structure on the Monongahela River that helps boats move between different water levels. Two separate chambers allow barges and cargo vessels to pass through while the dam creates a stable water channel for navigation.
The lock and dam structure began operations in 1905 as a replacement for an earlier facility dating to 1841. Major improvements took place between 1921 and 1953, resulting in a modernized system that better served river commerce.
The facility represents a critical component of the Pittsburgh Port District's infrastructure system, enabling continuous commercial navigation along the Monongahela River.
The lock operates daily to move boats through different water levels on the river. You can watch the process from nearby areas and see the gates open and close as vessels pass through.
The landward lock completed in 1953 was the largest inland lock in the United States until another facility surpassed it in 1959. This distinction made it a notable engineering achievement of its time.
