Sky Rocket, Steel roller coaster in Kennywood, US
Sky Rocket is a steel roller coaster at Kennywood that launches riders to high speeds in seconds using an electromagnetic launch system. The ride takes visitors through multiple inversions while allowing more upper body movement than traditional shoulder restraints.
The ride opened in 2010 and replaced the Turnpike attraction that operated since 1966 near the park entrance. The new installation brought technical advances that updated the visitor experience.
The installation marked a significant engineering advancement as Premier Rides' first roller coaster utilizing linear synchronous motors instead of linear induction motors.
Visitors should wear loose clothing and secure all items, as inversions cause intense movements. It helps to visit during quieter times of day to experience shorter lines.
Since 2017, riders can wear virtual reality headsets that create an alternate digital experience during the physical ride. This option allows two completely different experiences on the same track.
