Avon is a small unincorporated community in Dare County on North Carolina's coast, situated on Hatteras Island. The settlement spans roughly two square miles with open spaces and homes, some directly facing the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound, offering constant water views.
The area was originally called Kinnakeet before being renamed Avon in 1883 to improve postal delivery. The community developed around a lifesaving station built in 1874 to rescue ships along the coast, operating until 1954.
The community was renamed Avon in 1883 when a post office opened, replacing the original name Kinnakeet. Fishing and maritime traditions shape daily life here, with boats and water-based livelihoods forming the core of local culture and community bonds.
Avon sits on Hatteras Island roughly an hour south of Nags Head, offering easy access to beach activities on both ocean and sound sides. Most visitor areas are reachable on foot or by car, and the region is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore with vehicle access restrictions requiring permits.
The former Little Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station from the 1870s now stands within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, showcasing the history of rescue operations along this perilous coast. The station represents a rare surviving example of these historic rescue outposts that predated the modern Coast Guard.
