The port was developed in the 1990s following oil discoveries in the Shabwah region. Operations commenced in the 2000s but were later interrupted due to regional conflicts.
The port represents Yemen's primary gateway for oil exports, managed by the Yemen Oil and Mining Investments Company under national petroleum authorities.
The facility sits on a remote coastal stretch, making access by car or boat the only options. Visits are not recommended due to current security conditions in the area.
The facility generated annual revenues of 4 billion dollars until 2015, when operations ceased due to regional security conditions.
