The House with Griffins is a two-story mansion featuring stone sculptures of mythological creatures placed at the top corners of its main facade. The facade blends various architectural styles that make the building visually distinctive.
Architect Johann Edel designed the mansion in 1896 for B. Lazerev during the economic boom driven by Azerbaijan's oil industry. This period fundamentally shaped the architectural development of central Baku.
The building served as the seat of Georgian diplomatic representation during the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan under Ambassador N. Alshibay. Its rooms reflect this significant political role in the city's past.
The building stands on Yusif Mammadaliyev Street in central Baku, near the former Institute of Theater. The location is easily accessible on foot and sits within a busy district containing other historic structures.
The facade combines Italian architectural influences with local design elements, reflecting the German-educated architect's diverse training. This blend of European and regional features was uncommon in Baku of that era.
