Synagogue of the Ashkenazi Jews in Baku, Jewish religious center in Baku, Azerbaijan
The Synagogue of the Ashkenazi Jews is a Jewish religious building located at 171 Dilara Aliyeva Street in Baku with design elements inspired by Jerusalem. The structure provides spaces for worship and community gatherings that serve the needs of the local Jewish population.
The building was converted from a civil defense shelter into a synagogue in 1946 to serve both Ashkenazi and Georgian Jewish communities. The current structure was completed in 2003 through voluntary contributions from the Azerbaijani Jewish community.
The synagogue contains two prayer halls that serve different traditions within the Jewish community. The larger space hosts Ashkenazi services while the smaller area welcomes Georgian Jews for their own observances.
The synagogue is led by Rabbi Shneor Segal and includes the Or-Avner educational complex that provides resources for Jewish children and families. Visitors should expect an active community space that serves both religious and educational purposes.
The building originally served as a civil defense shelter during World War Two before being repurposed after the war ended. This unexpected transformation shows how a refuge built for protection became a spiritual center for the community.
