Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theatre, Theatre company in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theatre is a theatre in central Baku that presents all its performances in Russian. The building stands on Hagani Street and holds an auditorium with around 450 seats.
The theatre was founded in December 1920, shortly after Soviet power was established in Azerbaijan, drawing on members of the Russian Yarasa theatre group who had stayed in Baku. From its earliest years it operated as the main Russian-language stage in the city.
The theatre stages Russian classics alongside works by Azerbaijani playwrights, making it a meeting point between two literary traditions. Audiences today can experience performances in Russian in the heart of Baku, a city where the language still has deep roots.
The theatre is on a central street in Baku and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city centre. It is worth booking seats in advance, as popular productions tend to fill up quickly.
In 1937 the theatre received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, a state honour that was rarely awarded to arts institutions so early in their history. This recognition came less than two decades after the theatre first opened its doors.
