Fuente Dé, Mountain village in Camaleño, Spain.
Fuente Dé is a mountain settlement at 1,094 meters (3,590 feet) within Picos de Europa National Park, surrounded by steep limestone walls and deep valleys. The village sits on a high plateau where buildings are scattered across meadows, with views of towering rock faces on all sides.
The settlement began as a simple herding station and transformed into a tourism center after the cable car opened in 1966. This connection to the outside world reshaped how the place functioned and why people came there.
The community preserves its connection to herding and mountain living through local customs and celebrations that mark the seasons. This heritage shows itself in how villagers move through their day and in the simple way the settlement is built.
The village is reached by car or on foot, so plan extra travel time to get there. The cable car is the main way to reach the higher plateau above, making exploration straightforward once you arrive.
The cable car rises to El Cable station in under 4 minutes, arriving at a place where the ground suddenly ends and a vertical cliff face drops away. Visitors stand on a metal platform suspended above this void, creating an unforgettable moment of height and exposure.
