Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura, Atlantic island in Canary Islands, Spain

Fuerteventura is an Atlantic island stretching about one hundred kilometers, featuring sandy coasts along the shores. Volcanic formations and hills define the terrain, with the Jandia Peninsula rising to around eight hundred meters (2,600 ft).

French knights led by Jean de Béthencourt arrived in 1402 and began the conquest of the territory. Two years later, they founded Betancuria as the first capital, which remained the center of governance for centuries.

Locals call themselves Majoreros and preserve traditions rooted in goat herding and farming on dry terrain. Coastal towns maintain fishing customs, and visitors experience dishes shaped by local ingredients like goat cheese.

Temperatures stay around twenty-two degrees Celsius (72°F) year-round with little rain, allowing outdoor activities in all seasons. Winds blow steadily, especially along the eastern and northern coasts, making it suitable for water sports.

The coastline holds more than one hundred fifty beaches, ranging from tiny coves to long sandy stretches. Steady wind patterns have made the island a favored destination for windsurfers and kitesurfers from around the world.
