Barbaria Lighthouse, Coastal lighthouse at southern tip of Formentera, Spain

Barbaria Lighthouse stands on a rocky point at Formentera's southern tip and rises about 19 meters tall. It sends intermittent light signals visible from up to about 18 nautical miles away.

Construction of the lighthouse began in 1971, though initial plans dated to 1924. This gap shows the long journey toward improving maritime safety in the region.

The name Cap de Barbaria comes from historical links to North African Berbers who traveled these Mediterranean waters long ago. This heritage shapes how people understand this southern location today.

Access by vehicle is restricted during summer months, and visitors need to walk about two kilometers from a parking area. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the path crosses rocky terrain.

The installation uses solar power and electromagnetic rotation systems while keeping its original optical equipment from when it first operated. This blend of modern and traditional technology shows how the lighthouse has adapted over time.
