Pabellón de Cristal, Exhibition building in Casa de Campo, Spain
Pabellón de Cristal is an exhibition building in Casa de Campo with a geometric glass-and-steel design that creates a light-filled interior space. The transparent walls and metal framework work together to form a structure that feels both solid and open at the same time.
Designed in 1964 by Francisco de Asís Cabrero, this building was created as an exhibition space for agricultural machinery at Madrid's International Agriculture Fair. It marked a shift toward modernist thinking in Spanish architecture during the post-war period.
The glass structure embodies a modern approach to design that opened doors for contemporary buildings across Spain, becoming a reference point for how exhibition spaces could be built differently.
The building stands out clearly in the park with its transparent glass walls, making it easy to locate and view from multiple angles. Visitors can walk around and see the interior and exterior freely, with access typically available during daylight hours.
German architect Mies van der Rohe visited the pavilion in 1965 and praised it with the phrase 'Das ist es, das ist es!' (That's it!), a rare compliment from a modernist pioneer. This endorsement from one of the 20th century's greatest architects cemented international recognition for the project.
