Buraca, Sand and rock beach in Oia, Spain

Buraca is a beach with rock and golden sand features located in Oia, extending roughly 130 meters in length and 20 meters in width. The shoreline shows a mix of rock formations and sandy areas, creating varied sections along the coast that change in character as you walk.

Buraca lies in the parish of Oia, east of Cape Estai, on a coast where fishing and maritime work long sustained local families. The beach is bordered by detached houses, and the footpath that now leads to it from Arquitecto Antonio Cominges street runs between villas built for residents of the area. Its sheltered position has kept it a beach used mainly by people living nearby.

The beach takes its name from the Galician word for a small cave or hollow, a reference to the rocky inlets along this stretch of coast. It is used mainly by residents of the nearby housing estates, who come down the pedestrian path from Arquitecto Antonio Cominges street. From the sand, sunsets over the Cíes Islands are visible.

Access and available space change considerably based on tide levels, so checking the tide schedule before your visit helps you plan better. Low tide reveals more of the shoreline and creates natural pools to explore, while high tide may restrict movement along certain sections.

The beach lies hidden among large villas east of Cape Estai, so it is used mainly by residents of the nearby urbanisations rather than day-trippers. From its sand and rock shore you can watch the sun set over the Cíes Islands.
