Prometheus Cave Natural Monument, Limestone cave in Imereti region, Georgia.

Prometheus Cave is a limestone cave system in Georgia's Imereti region stretching 2.9 kilometers and featuring six interconnected halls. These chambers contain stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers, lakes, and formations of petrified waterfalls.

The cave formed over millions of years through water erosion cutting through limestone rock. Local speleologists discovered it in 1984, leading to its recognition as a natural monument.

The cave takes its name from Prometheus in Greek mythology, the titan who gave fire to humanity. This mythological connection gives the underground chambers a symbolic weight as visitors walk through these ancient stone passages.

The cave paths are illuminated, allowing safe passage through the dark chambers without special equipment. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven, and bring a jacket since the cave maintains a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit).

Inside the cave grow helictites, crystal formations that develop horizontally and appear to defy gravity through unusual crystallization patterns. These rare geological features form where water flows at angles that create deposits in unexpected directions.
