Humewood Castle

Humewood Castle is a Gothic-revival castle in Kiltegan that features granite walls, towers, and crenellations rising above extensive parkland. The structure displays 19th-century architectural details with multiple stories and rooms arranged to reflect the design choices of its era.

The castle was built in the 19th century, replacing an earlier fortress that the Hume family had occupied since the 15th century in the Kiltegan area. This construction represented a modernization of the family's Irish residence over generations.

The principal rooms of the castle include grand spaces such as drawing rooms, dining halls, and ballrooms positioned on the first floor for security reasons.

The castle is closed to the public, but the grounds can be viewed from nearby areas in the village of Kiltegan. St. Peters Church of Ireland is located nearby and contains a mausoleum related to the estate's history.

Construction costs significantly exceeded the original budget, leading to a court case between the architect and the builder during the project's completion. This legal dispute became a notable part of the castle's development history.
