Benleagh, Mountain summit in County Wicklow, Ireland.
Benleagh is a mountain summit in County Wicklow that rises above the Fraughan Rock Glen valley. Its granite form is steep and angular, marked by large exposed rocks and areas of unstable boggy ground throughout the ascent.
The mountain was strategically important in the 1580s when military forces clashed over control of the valley below. The difficult terrain provided a strong defensive position for those fighting to retain their mountain lands.
The Irish name Binn Liath means Grey Peak, a reference to the stone colours that dominate the summit and surrounding slopes. Locals still use this traditional name when discussing the mountain.
The walk starts from a car park at Baravore near Glenmalure village, with a marked path heading into the glen. You should wear sturdy waterproof boots and bring rain gear, as bog and wet conditions are common even on dry-looking days.
Hidden bog holes lie beneath the surface along the route, creating sudden drops that catch hikers off guard. These natural hazards are a distinctive feature of the high moorland and demand careful foot placement throughout the climb.
