Chengalpattu, Administrative center in Chengalpattu district, India
Chengalpattu is an administrative center in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu, situated about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Chennai along National Highway 45. The town spreads across flat terrain at 36 meters (118 feet) above sea level, with Kolavai Lake bordering its northern edge and residential and commercial areas extending along the main roads.
Between 600 and 900, the area developed into an administrative and military center under Pallava rule. Later, it served as a base during British colonial times and grew into a district headquarters after independence.
The name comes from the water lilies that grow in the region and are called Chengu in Tamil. Many residents visit temples early in the morning before heading to work, and the streets fill with the scent of incense and jasmine flowers during those hours.
The railway junction connects southern Tamil Nadu with Chennai through regular services and sits right on the main road heading south. Traveling early in the morning or late afternoon means less traffic and easier navigation around town.
Kolavai Lake water supplies industries in Chennai and hosts a particular variety of water lilies that gave the town its name. On some afternoons, you can see fishermen along the shore working with traditional nets and selling their catch right on the spot.
