Tonk district, Administrative district in Rajasthan, India
Tonk is a district in Rajasthan, spanning varied landscapes across western India with different terrain types. The region shares borders with Jaipur district to the north and Sawai Madhopur district to the east.
The district was founded in 1817 under Nawab Amir Khan and served as the capital of a princely state during the British colonial period. Following India's independence, the region was reorganized and integrated into the newly formed state.
The district is home to several religious sites including the Shahi Jama Masjid and multiple Hindu temples that reflect how different communities coexist in this region. These structures are woven into daily life and shape the character of its towns and villages.
The district is divided into nine smaller administrative divisions, with its main city, Tonk, located to the south of Jaipur. The road network connects the region well to the rest of Rajasthan, running through agricultural areas.
A meteorite fell within this region in 1911, becoming known in scientific circles as the Tonk meteorite. This rare event makes the area of geological interest to researchers and collectors worldwide.
