Srirangapatna, Ancient temple town in Karnataka, India
Srirangapatna is a settlement on a river island in the Kaveri in Karnataka, surrounded by walls and fortified gates from its military past. Inside the old boundaries lie temple complexes, palace remains and residential quarters from different centuries.
The settlement was founded in the 9th century and developed into a regional power center under different ruling dynasties. At the end of the 18th century it fell after a siege lasting several weeks by British troops.
The name comes from Sri Ranganatha, a form of Vishnu worshipped in the local main temple. Residents and pilgrims visit the shrine on festival days, when the lanes around the temple compound fill with flower sellers and incense vendors.
Most points of interest lie along the main road that cuts across the island and can be explored easily on foot. Local buses and trains connect the town with larger nearby cities in less than half an hour.
In a small cemetery at the edge of town rest European mercenaries who fought under different flags and remained here after the battle. Their gravestones carry inscriptions in several languages and recall the distant journeys that brought them this far.
