Hindaun, city in Rajasthan, India
Hindaun is a city in Karauli District in Rajasthan, known for its red sandstone architecture and industrial significance. The city sits in a valley near the Aravalli Mountains and has well-developed roads as well as a railway station on the main line between Delhi and Mumbai.
Hindaun was once the seat of the Meena kingdom and later fell under Rajput rule, with Jat families settling the region over generations. The city is tied to ancient Hindu legends, particularly the story of King Hiranyakashyap and his son Prahlad.
Hindaun is named after the legendary king Hiranyakashyap and remains deeply connected to mythological stories found in ancient Hindu texts. Visitors can feel this connection in the temples and sacred sites where pilgrims regularly come to pray and celebrate local festivals such as Holi and Diwali.
The city is easy to reach with good road connections to Jaipur, Agra, and other nearby places, plus regular bus and train services. Visitors should come during October to March when the weather is dry and pleasant.
The red sandstone architecture of the city appears in famous monuments like the Red Fort in Delhi and the Akshardham Temple. Many of these stones have been exported from local quarries and factories in Hindaun over many decades.
