Bijai Garh, Ancient fort in Bayana, Bharatpur district, India.
Bijai Garh is a stone fort in Bharatpur district with external walls made of red sandstone and numerous pillars carved with historical inscriptions. The structure displays architectural layers from multiple dynasties that built and modified it over several centuries.
The fort was established in 1040 and served as an important defensive position that successive rulers expanded and reinforced. Its fortifications later caught the attention of Mughal emperor Babur, who recognized it as a significant stronghold.
The fort contains both Hindu temples and Islamic structures side by side, showing how different faiths coexisted within the same space over time.
The fort is located outside Bayana city and accessible by local transportation, with the best visit period from October to March when the climate is moderate. Explore on foot and bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the site is relatively exposed.
Within the fort stands an ancient red sandstone pillar decorated with intricate carvings that demonstrates the technical skill of early craftspeople. This pillar is older than the fort itself and was originally erected elsewhere before being brought to this location.
