Jorhat is a commercial center in Jorhat district, Assam, India, spreading along a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. More than a hundred tea gardens shape the surrounding area and give the region its agricultural character.
The Ahom king Gaurinath Singha moved his capital from Sibsagar to this location in 1794 and established it as a trading center. The riverside position favored the exchange of goods and attracted merchants from different parts of the region.
