Mukteshwar, Mountain village in Nainital district, India
Mukteshwar is a mountain village in Nainital district, perched at 2171 meters (7123 feet) in the Kumaon Hills with views of several Himalayan peaks. Houses spread along the slopes between pine forests, and old stone research buildings stand near the temple grounds above the main settlement.
The Indian Veterinary Research Institute opened its first laboratory here in 1893 to produce serum against cattle diseases. The facility brought scientists and staff to the remote area and turned the small settlement into a center for animal health research during colonial times.
The village takes its name from the Shiva temple at the highest point, where pilgrims offer prayers and make offerings throughout the year. Local families tend terraced fields and orchards on the slopes, while walkers follow narrow paths through pine forests and between stone walls.
Visitors can drive here from Pantnagar Airport in about three hours or take a shorter journey from Kathgodam Railway Station through the hills. Roads are narrow and winding, so daylight travel is easier, especially in wet weather.
The Chauli-ki-Jali cliffs offer natural rock faces for climbers and an open view over the valleys below. Narrow gaps and passages in the rock remind visitors of the name, which refers to perforated fabric.
