Surathkal, Educational district in coastal Mangalore, India.

Surathkal is a coastal settlement in Dakshina Kannada district that stretches along the Arabian Sea shoreline with gently elevated terrain. It is home to the National Institute of Technology Karnataka campus and features a functioning lighthouse that marks the coastline.

The name Surathkal comes from 'shiradakal' in local Kannada and Tulu languages, meaning 'headstone' in those dialects. This linguistic origin reflects the long settlement history and multilingual heritage of the coastal region.

The Sadashiva Mahaganapathi temple near the shore attracts locals and visitors who come to experience its spiritual significance in daily community life. The temple serves as a focal point where religious practices and social gatherings take place throughout the year.

The settlement is accessible via National Highway 66 and has a railway station on the Konkan route connecting Mumbai to Mangaluru. Visitors should expect regular train traffic and plan visits accordingly, as this is an active transportation corridor.

A lighthouse commissioned in 1972 still operates along the coast, serving as a historical beacon for maritime navigation. This structure stands as a reminder of the area's role in supporting sea travel through the decades.
