Delhi Ridge, Mountain ridge in Delhi, India.
Delhi Ridge is a mountain ridge extending from Tughlaqabad in the southeast to Wazirabad on the northwest bank of the Yamuna River. It divides into four sections - Northern, Central, South-Central, and Southern - with multiple entry points accessible throughout the year.
The ridge formed about 1.5 billion years ago as part of the ancient Aravalli Range, one of the world's oldest mountain systems. Over immense spans of time, this geological structure shaped the landscape of Delhi and its surroundings.
Buddha Jayanti Park sits within the ridge and contains a gilded Buddha statue alongside a sapling descended from the original Bodhi Tree. Visitors can observe these spiritual symbols while walking through the grounds and sense the religious importance woven into the landscape.
The ridge is open year-round with trails suitable for walkers, joggers, and cyclists of different abilities. Early morning visits work best, as conditions are more comfortable and the paths are less crowded.
The ridge acts as a natural barrier against hot winds from Rajasthan and helps Delhi maintain its status as a bird-rich area despite urban growth. This geological feature has shaped the city's ecosystem and climate for thousands of years.
