Jaisalmer Wind Park, wind farm in Rajasthan, India
Jaisalmer Wind Park is a wind farm in the desert region of Rajasthan, located east of Jaisalmer. The facility spans a large area with more than a thousand turbines in varying sizes, from older 350-kilowatt models to newer 2.1-megawatt units that generate over 1600 megawatts of power capacity.
The wind farm was established in 2001 and was among the first large wind projects in India. It developed in phases, growing from small 350-kilowatt turbines to modern 2.1-megawatt units, reaching 1000 megawatts of total capacity by 2012.
The park sits in an open, flat desert landscape with consistent southwest winds and is most accessible during the dry season. Visitors should prepare for hot and dry conditions and bring plenty of water, as shade and facilities are limited in this remote area.
The facility is India's largest operating wind farm by capacity and one of the four largest onshore wind farms in the world. It demonstrates how pioneering technology projects in India have been transformed into modern, highly efficient systems through systematic upgrades over time.
