Kameng Elephant Reserve

Kameng Elephant Reserve protects a mountain region with forests, grasslands, and river valleys spread across varying elevations. The landscape transitions from lower foothill areas to high peaks, creating diverse habitats for wildlife.

The reserve gained official protection in 2002 as a dedicated elephant sanctuary and habitat corridor. This designation followed recognition of the need to safeguard migration routes and populations in this region.

Indigenous groups living near the reserve have long followed seasonal patterns that align with elephant movements and forest cycles. This knowledge shapes how people and wildlife coexist in the landscape today.

Plan visits between October and February when weather is clearest and wildlife is easier to spot. Bring appropriate gear for forest walks and hilly terrain, as the landscape requires sturdy footwear.

More than 450 butterfly species live across the forest layers, making it a hotspot for insect diversity. Birdwatchers will find another surprising richness with hundreds of species calling this landscape home.
