Nameri National Park, National park in Sonitpur district, India
Nameri National Park is a protected area in the eastern Himalayan foothills within Sonitpur district, covered by dense forest and crossed by two major rivers. The terrain shifts between thick tree cover, open grassland patches, and riverbeds winding through the reserve.
The area was declared a reserve forest in 1978 and gained sanctuary status in 1985. National park classification followed thirteen years later.
The protected area takes its name from the Nameri River and serves as a stronghold for wildlife conservation in the eastern Himalayan foothills. Visitors can observe hornbills and rare duck species in their natural habitat along the riverbanks.
Visitors must register at the forest office in Potasil before entering the reserve for guided walks. The trails pass through different vegetation zones and follow the river courses.
The reserve shares a direct boundary with Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, creating a cross-border conservation zone. This connection allows migratory species to move across a larger uninterrupted habitat.
