Rourkela Airport, airport in India
Rourkela Airport is a small regional airport located west of the city of Rourkela, in the Indian state of Odisha. The single-story terminal contains check-in counters, a security screening area, seating, and baggage claim, all within a compact building designed for a limited number of passengers per hour.
The site started as a private airstrip built by the steel industry in the 1950s to move executives around the region quickly. In 1961, the Airports Authority of India took over, gradually opening the facility to limited civil aviation alongside its original industrial purpose.
The airport takes its name from the industrial city it serves. Inside the terminal, visitors can see local artwork and traditional crafts from Odisha, giving travelers a first or last impression of the region's artistic traditions as they pass through.
The terminal is small and easy to navigate, so check-in and security tend to move quickly. Since the airport operates only during daylight hours, it is worth confirming your flight schedule in advance and planning your journey by taxi or car along National Highway 143, which links the airport to the city.
Although the airport has existed for decades, it only began handling regular passenger flights in 2023 following major upgrades to its infrastructure. This makes it one of the more recently activated regional airports in India for scheduled services, despite its long history as an airstrip.
