Kuda Caves, Buddhist cave complex in Raigad district, India
The Kuda Caves contain 26 rock-cut chambers carved into basaltic rock formations, including four prayer halls and multiple residential structures for monks.
Dating from the 1st century BCE, these caves served as a monastic retreat during the early spread of Buddhism in western India.
The caves feature sculptures of the Buddhist Triad, narrative panels depicting Buddha's life, and inscriptions that document the patronage of local rulers.
Visitors need sturdy walking shoes to explore the cave system, and should plan their visit between October and February when temperatures are moderate.
Cave 11 contains a rare architectural element featuring a hippocampus carving accompanied by an ancient inscription marking its sacred significance.
