Coastal Road, Infrastructure project in South Mumbai, India
Coastal Road runs along the Arabian Sea and connects the southern part of the city with the western neighborhoods through a multilane expressway. The system combines elevated lanes with tunnels and passes through densely populated districts.
Work began in late 2018 to improve traffic conditions in the metropolitan area. The first section opened to traffic in spring 2024.
The initiative includes new public parks on reclaimed land where city residents come to rest and walk. Families gather there in the late afternoon when temperatures become milder.
Part of the route is already open to traffic, while additional sections are being released gradually. Access is through junctions with existing main roads.
Construction included building a tunnel beneath the seabed that connects two neighborhoods. This solution was chosen to reduce the impact on the coastal area.
