Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai, Hindu temple in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, India
Siddhivinayak is a Hindu temple in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, that rises five stories and centers on a black stone statue flanked by two companion figures. Inside, corridors circle the main shrine while upper floors house a museum and medical facilities open to visitors.
A childless woman named Deubai Patil funded construction beginning in 1801 to help other women who wished for children. Over time, the original building was expanded several times and grew into the multi-story complex that stands today.
The deity here appears with a trunk that curves to the right, considered especially auspicious by worshippers who travel from across India to offer prayers. On Tuesdays, thousands arrive to place flowers and sweets before the deity and receive blessings for success in their endeavors.
Visitors must follow a specific dress code and pass through security checks before entering the inner areas. The building also includes a free medical clinic and a museum that are open most days.
The main statue wears a snake necklace around its neck and displays a third eye on its forehead, features usually associated with a different deity. In one hand the figure holds a lotus flower, in the other a goad, which is less common among representations of Ganesha.
