Godiji, Jain temple in Pydhonie, Mumbai, India
Godiji is a Jain temple in Karachi, Pakistan, with a central shrine housing a white marble statue of Parshwanath in a meditative posture. The interior features stone carvings and religious symbols spread across the worship spaces.
The temple was founded in 1812 and moved to its current site in 1868 after a fire destroyed its original building in the Fort area. The sacred statue was brought from Hamirpur in Rajasthan and has remained here since then.
Jain devotees gather here every day for prayer and ritual ceremonies. Visitors can notice offerings of flowers and incense, and hear devotional chanting that forms part of the community's daily practice.
The temple is located in a well-connected area of Karachi and can be reached on foot from several transit stops. Inside, there are meditation spaces and a dining area open to visitors.
In 2012, the temple marked its 200th anniversary with a communal meal shared by around 800,000 people. The postal service commemorated the occasion with a special stamp issued in honor of the event.
