Simon Fraser University, Public research university in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Simon Fraser University operates across three connected campuses in Greater Vancouver, with its main site covering 170 hectares (420 acres) on Burnaby Mountain. The complex includes modern buildings, research facilities, and open outdoor spaces that spread across the forested mountain slopes.
The university emerged from a 1962 education initiative and opened in September 1965, welcoming 2,500 students to Burnaby Mountain. Over the following decades, it expanded through additional locations across the Vancouver region.
The institution takes its name from fur trader Simon Fraser, though the name was adjusted to avoid unfavorable readings of the original abbreviation. The Burnaby Mountain campus was designed by Arthur Erickson and reflects the modernist architectural style of the 1960s.
Students reach the campus through dedicated shuttle buses connecting to nearby SkyTrain stations, linking all three sites across Greater Vancouver. The Burnaby Mountain site is spread out, so visitors should plan time to explore the grounds.
The university became the first Canadian institution to join the NCAA, competing in Division II as the SFU Red Leafs. Its Burnaby Mountain architecture has been featured in films and television series as a futuristic backdrop.
