Terror Bay, Arctic bay in Kitikmeot Region, Canada
Terror Bay is a body of water between Fitzjames Island and Irving Island on King William Island's southwestern side, opening into Queen Maud Gulf. It stretches across several kilometers of Arctic shoreline shaped by ice and low terrain.
The bay takes its name from HMS Terror, which disappeared during John Franklin's Arctic expedition starting in 1845. The ship remained lost for 170 years before being discovered in these waters.
Inuit hunters kept oral traditions alive for generations about the ship's location in these waters. Local knowledge proved essential when the wreck was finally discovered.
Access to these waters requires permission from Parks Canada due to protection of the wreck site and its archaeological importance. Travel here demands preparation for harsh Arctic conditions and planning far in advance.
An Inuit hunter named Sammy Kogvik helped researchers locate the lost wreck in 2016 by sharing traditional knowledge passed down in his community. This discovery ended a decades-long search effort.
